about

As implied by the title, this one is a clear homage to Thad Jones, and his tune "A Child is Born." I played it to myself before my daughter Lucy was born, and -- checking-- yep, it still makes me cry.

Funny story: when I was in high school, I remember taking a car ride with some other jazz students. They asked me the dreaded "who are your influences?" question, to which I replied I was really into Cannonball Adderley. I don't know if they generally believed this or were just trying to troll me (this was high school after all), but they informed me that Cannonball Adderley isn't a "REAL" musician. According to them, on one of his albums, in the alternative tracks, he plays some of the same lines you hear in the final take. In other words, Cannonball wasn't REALLY improvising his solos.

Obviously my car-mates were wrong. Cannonball is the best. That said, I still don't like to overly plan out my improvised solos unless there's something very specific I want to say. This tune has one such example. If you listen closely at about 3:55, there's a fairly subtle but unmistakable quote I will always find a way to work in.

Spoiler: It's "I Love Lucy."
